Project #2 - Interactive Typography
RAW, RAGE, GORE
Design Process
For my selection of interactive typography, I wanted to explore powerful and visceral words. “RAW, RAGE, GORE” were the first words to come to mind, and I wanted to accurately reflect these meanings into my sketches. I wanted to create really overwhelming and fast paced sketches that were reminiscent of glitch art. I quickly realized that I was pushing p5 to its limits, however, by overloading the amount of objects being drawn on the screen that were constantly in motion. I picked different fonts for each word to try and reflect their meanings as well.
RAW: This is the “cleanest” of the sketches, which juxtaposes the words meaning. The word is overlapping itself and creating a flowing motion. I wanted it to look biological, like cells inside or veins. The cutesy color palette is reflective of how in a lot of censored works, blood is often colored pink instead of red
RAGE: The red reflects an external anger, visible to all. There is a thick black border between the outside of the world and the legible letters. The word rage slowly bleeds blue inside. I wanted this to be symbolic about how when people are angry, deep down inside they are simply hurting and sad.
GORE: I wanted this to look like DOOM era blood and guts. It’s weird, it’s melting, it’s in a low resolution. The font is over exaggerated, the colors don’t match. Everything about it looks unnatural, which is how I envision the word’s meaning.
For the interactions, each sketch changes depending on the mouse’s position on the screen. They are also affected by key presses to any of the arrow keys.
